Size Difference Between King & California King Bed Sheets

Purchasing sheets for a king sized mattress may be easy, though slightly confusing thanks to different design options that affect size measurements. However, shopping for a California king sheet set is more difficult and requires much more consideration.

Sizes

A regular king size mattress measures 78 inches wide and 80 inches long while the California, or western king mattress measures 72 inches wide and 84 inches long. However, the more obscure Eastern King size mattress measures 76 inches by 80 inches.

Depths

Measurements for mattress sheets vary by mattress depths, which alter greatly when considering pillow top or extra deep styles. Standard depths measure 7 to 9 inches, deep mattresses measure 10 to 15 inches, and extra deep mattresses range from 15 to 22 inches deep or more.

Options

Fabric options, such as flannel, fleece or silk, also affect the size of bed sheets also since each fabric stretches and clings differently. Manufactures may also use different weaving styles that slightly affect the sheet's measurements as well.

Flat Sheets

Flat sheets for a standard king sized mattress measure 106 to 108 inches wide by 96 to 102 inches long. For a California king sized mattress, sheets measure 100 to 112 inches wide, by 100 to 106 inches long.

Fitted Sheets

Fitted sheets for standard king sized mattresses measure 75 to 78 inches wide and 80 to 81 inches long. The California king size fitted sheets measure 69 to 74 inches wide and 84 to 86 inches long.
