Arctic Endangered Animals

Endangered species are scattered throughout the world. The Arctic is one place many people do not link with endangered species, but it has one of the fastest dying habitats in the world.

  1. Global Warming

    • Global warming is quickly causing great harm to a number of animals in the Arctic. Shrinking ice causes problems with the food chain and habitat.

    Beluga Whales

    • Beluga whales are a victim of a slimming food chain. Belugas eat Arctic cod and algae, but with less ice there is less algae for the fish as well as the belugas to eat.

    Polar Bears

    • Polar bears are quickly becoming endangered because there is not enough food for them to eat so they can build up fat for summer and autumn months. The lack of blubber makes them freeze during this time or starve to death.

    Arctic Foxes

    • Arctic foxes are slowly becoming endangered as polar bear populations are decreasing. The foxes eat off the carcasses of animals that polar bears kill, so with fewer numbers of polar bears, there is less food for Arctic foxes.

    Wolverines

    • Wolverines are becoming endangered because there is less thick ice to build dens in. Mothers abandon their dens early, leaving young wolverines alone to face the harsh conditions too soon.
