Southwestern Airlines Travel Rules & Regulations

Southwest Airlines is a low-cost carrier with a few policies unique to it.

  1. Newborns

    • A medical release is required for travel with infants younger than 14 days old.

    Lap Child

    • Southwest allows one lap child younger than 2 years old for no additional fee when traveling with an adult (age 12 or older). Proof of infant's age might be required.

    Infant Fares

    • Lower infant fares are available for babies and toddlers who require their own seat. An approved car seat is required.

    Pets

    • The airline accepts small vaccinated cats and dogs for a fee of $75 as of October 2009. In-cabin pets must be in an approved carrier.

    Baggage

    • Two checked bags with a maximum weight of 50 lbs. and a maximum size of 62 inches are allowed for free. Additional or oversized bags incur fees.

    Refunds for Cancellation

    • Not all flights on Southwest are refundable. All refunds are handled through reservations, customer relations or the refund department, or online if the outbound flight has not departed.
