Do I Need to File an Extension for the State of California Tax?

If you live California, you should know if you have to file an extension with the government if your taxes will be late. Besides filing late, you should know what you have to do about the tax money you owe.

  1. State Tax Extension

    • California does not require any extensions to be filed. Taxpayers have until Oct. 15 to file if they cannot meet the April 15 deadline.

    Form FTB 3519

    • If you owe money to the state for taxes, you must use Form FTB 3519 to figure out how much you will owe and send both to the proper government agency.

    Federal Extension

    • If you are not able to file your federal return by the April 15 deadline, you must file Form 4868. This form gives you until Oct. 15 to file your federal return.

    Federal Tax Money

    • If you owe money to the federal government for taxes, you must send that amount by April 15. There is no extension for money owed.

    Warning

    • Not paying your state and federal taxes before the April 15 deadline will result in penalties and interest charges.
