What Are the Benefits of Geodon?

Geodon is a drug used to treat bipolar disease and schizophrenia. It comes in a capsule and an injectable form. Daily recommended dosage ranges from 40 mg to 200 mg for the capsule and 20 mg to 40 mg for the injection.

  1. Benefits in Treatment of Bipolar Patients

    • According to Pfizer, the manufacturer of Geodon, the drug relieves several symptoms of bipolar disorder. They include relief of high or irritable mood; decrease in energy, activity and restlessness; decrease in racing thoughts or fast talking; increase in ability to focus; and increase in ability to sleep.

    Benefits in Treatment of Patients with Schizophrenia

    • According to Pfizer, the drug relieves symptoms of schizophrenia. They include reduction of hallucinations, reduction in delusions and relief of paranoia, and improvement in withdrawal, flat affect and lack of motivation symptoms.

    Side Effects

    • Geodon does have some side effects. They include sleepiness, dizziness, restlessness and uncontrolled muscle movements. Some people may experience weight gain.

    Taking Geodon

    • Geodon may take a few weeks to work. It should always be taken at the same time each day and be taken with food. People taking Geodon should keep taking it until their doctor tells them to stop.

    Who Should Not Take Geodon

    • Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis should not take Geodon. Taking Geodon puts them at increased risk of death. People with certain kinds of heart conditions should not take Geodon, as Geodon may increase the risk of changes to heart rhythm.
