Food technology is a field of agricultural science that deals with innovating new methods and systems for keeping food products safe, resistant to the threat of natural problems like bacteria and still affordable to average people.

Advancements in pesticides, preservatives and fertilizers have made the food industry more safe and profitable; however, much more work is needed in the field.

Statistics

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field of food technology and science will grow by 10 percent through 2016, resulting in the creation of 1,200 new jobs in this area.

Education

To qualify for a job as a food scientist or technologist, you need at least a master's degree in agricultural science, which requires approximately two years to complete. Some food technologists complete Ph.D. work in the field, which requires four to eight additional years of schooling.

Qualifications

Food technologists should possess certain skills in order to be attractive to employers. These include the ability to work equally well individually and on a team, to effectively communication, to interpret statistical data and to use logic and scientific methods to conduct inquiries.

Compensation

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an average annual salary of $64,610 in May 2008.
