Side Effects of Bordetella Vaccine

Bordetella or Kennel Cough is a type of respiratory tract infection that is common in dogs. Many owners choose to vaccinate their dogs in order to prevent Bordetella, but the vaccine does cause side effects in some animals.

  1. Time Frame

    • Typically, side effects of Bordetella occur three to ten days after administration of the vaccine.

    Types of Side Effects

    • Side effects of the Bordetella Vaccine include sneezing, coughing or nasal discharge. These side effects are very rare and usually are minor.

    Solution

    • If your dog develops cold symptoms after receiving the Bordetella Vaccine, your veterinarian can prescribe antibiotics to help them recover from the side effects more quickly.

    Risks

    • Rarely, dogs develop anaphylactic reactions to the Bordetella vaccine, causing rapid hear breat and shortness of breath. These reactions have the potential to result in shock or even death.

    Considerations

    • Your dog should not receive the Bordetella vaccine until he three weeks old. It is possible that your doctor will not vaccinate your dog if she is pregnant.
