-
Education, Skills and Experience
-
In some cases, organizations will hire administrative staff with little or no experience. They're required to have a high school diploma or GED, good typing, computer, and communication skills. They'll typically take on additional responsibilities as they gain knowledge in their role.
General Responsibilities
-
Administrative roles include supporting one or several employees within an organization. This includes managing calendars, travel, meetings and conferences. Administrators may be required to organize communications for the employees they support by responding to phone calls and emails, only forwarding information that must be addressed by the employee themselves. They also perform office functions such as setting up and maintaining alphabetical, numerical and subject files, copying, faxing and ordering supplies for the employees they support.
-
Additional Responsibilities
-
Administrative professionals are often required to be a first impression for the organization and employees they support. They're also often involved in process and efficiency improvement by testing new office products. They also assist other administrative staff with their duties and responsibilities.
Work Environment
-
Most administrative personnel will work in a comfortable office environment with computer and office equipment. They may be required to travel locally to run errands for the professionals they support.
Job Growth and Salaries
-
Increasing automation and restructuring will allow administrative personnel to be more productive, but because their responsibilities are primarily personal and interactive, administrative positions will not be easily automated. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, administrative jobs are expected to grow 9 percent from 2006 through 2016.
Salary ranges for administrative professions can range from $31,000 a year to $42,000 a year depending on the scope of the responsibilities.
