Effexor Vs. Paxil for Depression

Paxil (paroxetine) and Effexor (venlafaxine) are two antidepressants that can be used in the treatment of depression. Consult your physician in order to discuss whether Paxil or Effexor may be appropriate for you.

  1. Chemistry

    • Paxil is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that functions by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. Effexor is a serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) that functions by increasing both serotonin and norepinephrine levels in the brain.

    Glaucoma

    • Effexor has been linked to the development of glaucoma in a few cases. This side effect has not been seen with use of Paxil.

    Side Effects

    • Effexor and Paxil can both cause numerous side effects, including sexual dysfunction, dry mouth, dizziness, hypertension, and gastrointestinal problems.

    Withdrawal

    • Both Paxil and Effexor are associated with withdrawal symptoms during cessation of use, including vertigo, insomnia, feelings of electric shocks throughout the body, and panic attacks. Both medications require tapering of dosages when discontinuing use after long periods of taking the medications.

    Other Treatment Options

    • Other treatment options, including therapy, should be considered when treating depression. Therapy can help with the development of skills for managing depressive symptoms.
