Herbs That Are Toxic to Dogs

Herbs can be a valuable tool to treat different medical conditions in dogs, such as nausea, renal failure, liver disease, allergies and even cancer. However, not every herb is safe, and some can even be toxic to your dogs.

  1. Pennyroyal

    • Pennyroyal is commonly used to eliminate fleas, but the herb can be highly toxic to dogs and cats. If you are using pennyroyal, it should only be used in the infested area and under bedding, but not in bedding and never on or fed to the dog.

    Comfrey

    • Comfrey is beneficial for humans to boost the immune system and speed healing, but it isn't a good herb for dogs. The alkaloids in comfrey can cause permanent liver damage.

    Ephedra

    • Ephedra is also known as ma huang. It might be recommended for respiratory conditions, but can cause irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure and strokes in animals.

    Wormwood

    • Wormwood is a traditional herb used to treat parasites, especially worms. It is a strong herb, and even just a little too much can permanently damage the liver and kidneys.

    Garlic

    • Garlic has a reputation for boosting the immune system and strengthening the heart, but it shouldn't be given to dogs. Like onions, garlic can cause hemolytic anemia, where the walls of the red blood cells burst before they can replicate new blood cells.

    Warning

    • Most herbs are safe for dogs if used appropriately. It is best to seek the guidance of a veterinarian with training in how to use herbs.
