About the Denali Express Train

The golden spike for the Alaskan Railroad was driven home by President Warren G. Harding in 1923. Since then, this rail connection from Anchorage to Fairbanks has been serving business, military and leisure travelers. The railroad's flagship train is the Denali Star.

  1. Route

    • On its way from Anchorage to Fairbanks, the Denali Star stops at Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali Park.

    Schedule

    • The Denali Star offers daily service from mid-May to mid-September with morning departures from both Anchorage and Fairbanks.

    Gold Star Service

    • The Gold Star first class service was added in May 2005. Two glass domed double-deck luxury rail cars offer priority boarding, reserved seating, first class only dining area, complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and a prime viewing location.

    Hurricane Gulch

    • At 914 feet long and 296 feet above Hurricane Creek, the bridge at Hurricane Gulch is the longest on the route. The Denali Star crosses it on the section from Talkeetna to Denali.

    Denali National Park and Preserve

    • Denali National Park is open year round. Visitors in the summer season can take bus shuttles into wilderness areas and may encounter caribou, moose, wolves, Dall sheep and bear. If it is a clear day you may see the top of Mount McKinley, or as the Alaskans call it Denali.

    Fun Fact

    • The midway point between Fairbanks and Anchorage is Honolulu, Alaska at mile marker 288.7. Snow in this area can sometimes be over six feet deep.
