What Are the Causes of Asthma, Bronchitis & Arthritis?

Asthma is characterized by inflammation and constriction of your airways. Bronchitis occurs when the lining of your bronchial tubes (which take air to and from your lungs) is inflamed. Arthritis is typified by joint inflammation. All three are inflammatory conditions; however, each has different causes and risk factors.

  1. Asthma Causes

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, the exact cause is unclear; however, researchers believe that it is caused by a combination of factors like genetics and environment.

    Bronchitis Causes

    • Bronchitis can be caused by the virus that causes the common cold, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), exposure to tobacco smoke, exposure to certain fumes and airborne toxins.

    Arthritis Causes

    • Arthritis damages your joints, causing discomfort and pain. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by an autoimmune disorder in which your own immune system attacks your joints and causes inflammation. Osteoarthritis is usually caused by infection, joint injury or wear-and-tear from years of use.

    Asthma Risk Factors

    • Risk factors include living in an area with a high level of air pollution, family history, persistent childhood respiratory infections, repeated exposure to secondhand smoke and obesity.

    Bronchitis Risk Factors

    • Risk factors include smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke, having a compromised immune system, GERD or exposure to chemicals/airborne lung irritants (like ammonia, chlorine, bromine or textiles) at work.

    Arthritis Risk Factors

    • Risk factors include family history, age (risk increases as you get older), sex (rheumatoid arthritis affects more women than men), joint injuries and obesity.
