Strange Natural Disaster Facts

Natural disasters devastate areas across America throughout the year. From fires to flooding to mudslides, natural disasters are unpreventable.

  1. Hurricane

    • Although New York is not a large coastal state typically associated with hurricanes, it has experienced one. In 1908 a category one hurricane hit southern Queens, destroying a resort known as Hog Island.

    Hail

    • Large hail can be extremely devastating. The largest hailstone ever recorded was on June 22, 2003, in Aurora, Nebraska. This stone was 7 inches in diameter and had an 18.75-inch circumference.

    Volcano

    • On March 18, 1944, during World War II, an eruption of the Vesuvius volcano killed 26 B-25 bombers in San Sebastian.

    Mountain

    • Mount St. Helen's in Washington is one of the world's biggest natural wonders. On May 18, 1980, the mountain "blew up." An eruption is rare for mountains.

    Fire

    • The Peshtigo fire was the largest in U.S. history before 9/11. The interesting thing about this devastating fire is that it occurred the same day as the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.
