Dog Lyme Vaccine Side Effects

There are several vaccines available to the veterinarian to prevent Lyme disease in dogs. According to Susan Thorpe Vargas MS, Ph.D., there is currently a controversy in the veterinary community over the use and effectiveness of these vaccines.

  1. The Facts

    • Lyme disease, carried by ticks, is caused by bacteria. Usually carried by the tiny deer tick, this bacteria takes a circuitous route to reach your dog. At one time the tick fed on the blood of a deer mouse that was infected with the bacteria. When the tick then bit your dog, it transferred this bacteria.

    Identification

    • If your dog appears lame, lethargic, has a fever and loses weight, your veterinarian may suspect Lyme disease. A firm diagnoses requires blood tests be performed on the dog.

    Side Effects of the Vaccine

    • The most common type of Lyme disease vaccine contains preservatives called adjuvants. Veterinary immunologist Jean Dodds believes that these adjuvants are responsible for the side effects of the vaccine, and the fact that the side effects mimic the disease itself. For instance, the most common vaccine side effect is chronic arthritis which is also a symptom of Lyme disease.

    Considerations

    • After your dog receives the initial vaccine, you will need to return to your veterinarian for an additional shot 2 to 3 weeks later. Vaccines are then given annually.

    Solution/Prevention

    • Treatment of a dog infected with Lyme disease includes the use of antibiotics. Prevention of the disease includes tick control around your home, regular inspections of your dog for ticks, and vaccinations.
