Fly Fishing Gloves: Dexterity Vs. Warmth

Fly fishing gloves are used mainly in colder environments where you don't want your hands to freeze to your reel. The issue with gloves and fishing is the warmer the glove is, the harder it is to fish with the gloves on.

  1. Problem

    • Some of the best fly fishing is in colder environments that require gloves. Most gloves, while keeping one's hands warm, makes it more difficult to fish.

    Exposing the Fingers

    • Fingerless fly fishing gloves allow for more dexterity to reel in line, strip line and tie flies onto the line while sacrificing your fingers to the elements.

    Glove Materials

    • Fly fishing gloves are made using two types of main materials. Fleece is mainly used to keep the hands warm, while neoprene is used in areas where the gloves wear easily. Wool is sometimes used in place of fleece, but fleece tends to keep the hands warmer.

    Covering The Fingers

    • Some gloves have a mitten end that can flip over to keep the fingers warm in very cold environments. This adds bulk and extra moving parts that might hinder dexterity.

    Full Finger Slit Gloves

    • There are neoprene gloves that cover you whole hand and fingers with slits to expose you thumb and forefinger for tying flies. Neoprene tends to keep the hands warmer when the glove is wet compared with wool or fleece.

    Try Before Buying

    • Finding the perfect fly fishing glove comes down to trying on the different types of gloves and determining which fit you and your fishing style better. Some fly fishermen prefer fleece, while others prefer neoprene.
