Causes
-
HSV-1 and HSV-2 are typically contracted through open sores on the body, such as fever blisters, and are commonly found around the lips and mouth. A person can pass on HSV-2 through sexual intercourse. HSV-1 can be contracted through oral sex.
Symptoms
-
In most cases, people who have HSV-2 are unaware of it since there are generally no symptoms. When there are symptoms, sores are the most common. Others include enfluenza-like symptoms.
-
At Risk
-
Healthy adults do not usually experience serious health complications from genital herpes. People with a poor immune system, especially those with HIV, can experience severe and long-lasting symptoms.
Treatment
-
Genital herpes has recurring symptoms that can be treated, but there is no cure. Drugs can heal sores and reduce outbreaks.
Prevention/Solution
-
The chance of transmission of genital herpes can be reduced by abstaining from sexual activity during outbreaks and using condoms.
