What Is the Difference Between a Chicken and a Rooster?

A rooster is a male chicken, often called a cock. A female chicken is called a hen. Roosters are generally aggressive birds whose duty is to protect their hens.

  1. Roosting

    • Both male and female chickens will sleep perched up high, an act called "roosting." A rooster will remain perched during the day, guarding against predators.

    Crowing

    • Roosters are famous for the "cock-a-doodle-doo" at dawn, but this is only partially correct. In reality, roosters do crow in the morning, but also throughout the day, in order to protect their territory.

    Gamecocks

    • Gamecocks are roosters specially bred for cockfighting. Usually their combs and wattles are clipped, and they are bred for stamina and strength.

    Capons

    • A capon is a castrated rooster whose testicles are removed through a surgical procedure. Because testosterone is also removed, these roosters are often less aggressive and are fatter than regular roosters, making them a sought-after chicken for consumption.

    Chinese Zodiac

    • Roosters are one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. People born in the year of the rooster, like their aviary counterparts, are thought to be wise, talented and ambitious.
