What Are the Causes of Internet Addiction?

If the time a person spends online interferes with his love, professional or family life, this could be a sign of what is called Internet addiction disorder. This disorder has a variety of causes that are still being studied by psychologists.

  1. Depression

    • When a person is depressed, he may turn to online sites as a way to temporarily deal with the sadness and stress.

    Knowledge

    • Some people are "information addicts." The hunger for knowledge is so strong that they may not be able to stop themselves from doing Internet searches and reading informational articles.

    Compulsion

    • Often, a person will become addicted to the Internet because of an online activity that encourages another compulsive behavior. For instance, an online poker site could be detrimental to a compulsive gambler.

    Loneliness

    • Some people become addicted to Internet dating sites and chat lines due to loneliness and desperation to meet other people.

    Social Disorder

    • Anxiety and a social disorder could also cause an Internet addiction. The person seeks to escape from the real world, which she finds scary, to a fantasy world online where she can be more outgoing.
