Bone Density Test Results

Bone density tests are a vital tool in diagnosing osteoporosis. As you get older, having this test done may be necessary to protect your bones. The results of the test can be confusing if not explained.

Who Should Be Tested

Men over age 70 and women over age 65 should be tested. Younger people should be tested if they exhibit warning signs, such as easily breaking bones.

Where

The test can be done in most hospital radiology departments. In most states, a prescription or referral is needed to have a bone density test done.

How Often

If you are taking osteoporosis medication, you should repeat the test at least once every two years. Your doctor may ask that you take the bone density test more often.

T-Score

The lower your T-score, the lower your bone density. Scores between plus 1 and minus 1 denote normal bone density, while scores below minus 2.5 are a diagnosis of osteoporosis.

Z-Score

The Z-score is most often used to diagnose osteoporosis in pre-menopausal women, younger men and children. Scores above minus 2 are considered normal.
