Carpet Fiber Types

When shopping for carpeting, many people consider color, cost and pattern. Also consider carpet fiber types to make sure the proper flooring is placed in a home.

Types

Wool, nylon, polypropylene olefin, acrylic modacrylic and polyester are all carpet fiber types. Each of the different types has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Features

Stain resistance, resiliency, abrasion resistance, static, resistance to sunlight and mildew and flammability are important features of carpet fiber to consider while shopping.

Considerations

Wool can hold up to 10 times its weight in water. It is susceptible to mold, mildew and wear. Oily stains must be promptly treated on polyproplylene olefin and polyester.

Benefits

Carpet made out of the right fiber will last many years and will retain its attractive appearance. Stain-resistant properties in many carpet fiber types add to the useful life of the carpet.

Warning

Pulling heavy items across carpet made out of polypropylene olefin could result in melted carpet fibers.
