Difference Between Cello & Double Bass

The cello and the double bass share a few similarities, such as the fact that both instruments are members of the string family and have similar construction. On the other hand, there are quite a few differences between the two instruments as well.

  1. Size

    • The double bass is the largest member of the string family. The cello is the second largest member.

    Tuning

    • The strings of a double bass are tuned to E, A, D and G, but the cello's strings are tuned to C, G, D and A.

    Tone

    • The double bass has a deeper tone that the cello.

    Genres

    • Cellos are most commonly used in classical music, but you may occasionally hear them in popular music as well. While double basses are used in classical music, they are used in other genres more often than the cello. These genres include bluegrass, rockabilly and jazz.

    Technique

    • Both the double bass and the cello can be plucked or bowed, but the double bass also can be slapped in a special style known as "slap bass."
