- The primary responsibility of the choir director is presiding over rehearsals. This means not only keeping time to the music but also listening for problem spots, modeling diction and style, and addressing musical questions of choir members.
- A church choir director must spend at least as much time outside of rehearsal as in rehearsal looking over music to be rehearsed, making notations of sections to practice and performance techniques that he wants to model.
- The church choir director must also choose the music to be sung for each service based upon the church calendar, the text of the piece and the musical ability of the choir.
- Most churches are equipped with all-volunteer choirs, meaning some choir members might have less musical background than others. The director must take the time to help those choir members who are struggling with the music so they will be encouraged to continue participating.
- All duties of a church choir director must be carried out with a congenial attitude of cooperation reflected in his work with the choir, pastors and other staff and members of the congregation.
