About Wolf Hybrids

A wolf hybrid, sometimes called a wolf dog, is a cross between a wolf and a domestic dog. Not considered ideal pets because of its wolf traits, the number of pet owners with wolf hybrids has grown sharply because of increased popularity and media attention.

  1. Physical Traits

    • They will depend on which breed the wolf is crossed with. Popular domestic breeds crossed with wolves include malamute, husky and shepherd. Typically, they look similar to a wolf with a smaller head and larger ears.

    Temperament

    • Domestic dog and wolf hybrid behavior is similar as puppies up until about 18 months, at which point a wolf hybrid might start to show behavioral traits similar to a wolf, including aggressive and dominant behavior.

    Owner Safety

    • The increased number of wolf hybrids has stirred up controversy about safety and ethics of breeding hybrids. Owners are advised that wolf hybrids are not ideal for families with children as children can be perceived as a wounded animal to the hybrid if they cry or stare at the dog.

    Training

    • The wolf hybrid is difficult to train, and owners must be vigilant to maintain their alpha status to keep these animals and the people coming in contact with them safe.

    Legal Ownership

    • The legality of owning a wolf hybrid varies depending on which state you live in. Some states consider them domestic animals with no permits required, a few do not permit ownership at all and some require permits.
