Dementia Prognosis

Dementia is characterized by mental changes such as loss of memory and higher cognitive skills. It most often occurs when the cells in the brain degenerate due to aging or other conditions such as disease.

  1. Cause

    • The prognosis for someone with dementia usually depends on the underlying cause, which usually varies from individual to individual.

    Vitamin Deficiency

    • If dementia is caused by vitamin deficiency, the person will recover in most cases when he receives proper nutrition.

    Alzheimer's Disease

    • In most cases, people with Alzheimer's disease will experience dementia that gets progressively worse. While some drugs and therapies can slow the course of the disease, the outlook for those with Alzheimer's is fairly bleak.

    Stroke

    • Stroke victims will also suffer from permanent damage. The damage is sudden and rarely tends to be progressive.

    Duration

    • Many people can live for years with dementia, and it is irreversible in most cases. People with dementia also frequently suffer from depression.
