Cyproheptad Side Effects

Cyproheptadine, often shortened to cyproheptad, is an antihistamine that reduces the natural chemical histamine in the body. Available as the brand Periactin and in generic form, this drug is mainly prescribed to relieve allergy symptoms. Many side effects are possible.

  1. Uses

    • Cyproheptadine relieves allergy symptoms such as sneezing and runny nose, as well as hives and itching. Doctors also prescribe cyproheptadine to treat Cushing's syndrome and migraine and cluster headaches. Additionally, cyproheptadine can stimulate appetite in underweight patients.

    Common Side Effects

    • Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, constipation or diarrhea, upset stomach, dry mouth or nose, tingling sensations and increased urination.

    Considerations

    • Cyproheptadine side effects may impair your thinking or reactions. If this happens, do not drive or do other activities that could be dangerous when not alert. Alcohol can increase these effects.

    Age Concerns

    • Elderly people may be more sensitive to cyproheptadine side effects. Children should never be given cyproheptadine except under a physician's recommendation, and dosage must be kept low to prevent life-threatening side effects.

    Contraindications

    • People with certain health conditions may not be able to safely take cyproheptadine. These include glaucoma, gastrointestinal ulcer, enlarged prostate, overactive thyroid, asthma, high blood pressure or heart disease.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Possible serious side effects include mental or mood changes, irregular heartbeat, heart palpitations and difficulty urinating. Although rare, liver dysfunction signs include jaundice, fatigue and dark urine. An allergic reaction also is possible, with symptoms of rash, swelling, difficulty breathing and severe dizziness.
