What Is the Animal Sea-Monkey?

Sea-Monkeys can seem a bit magical as they spring to life when reintroduced to water. However, they aren't from the sea and don't have anything to do with monkeys.

  1. What They Are

    • Sea-Monkeys are a species of brine shrimp with the scientific name Artemia nyos. They have been sold as pets since the 1960s, and they are bred for their size and hardiness so they are more suitable as pets.

    How They Come to Life

    • The shrimp are able to go into a state of cryptobiosis, or dormancy. This can be brought on by exposure to extreme dryness, cold or lack of oxygen. However, the shrimp become active again as soon as their environment improves.

    What They Eat

    • Most Sea-Monkey kits include a packet of growth food. However, because brine shrimp eat algae, so you should allow a controlled amount of it to grow in the tank.

    Why They Are Called Monkeys

    • The company that sells Sea-Monkeys says the name comes from the shrimp's "funny behavior and long tail."

    Where They Are

    • Sea-Monkeys are sold as pets in 12 countries. They even had their own TV show, "The Amazing Life of Sea Monkeys." They are available online and through mail order.
