Signs of Breast Infection

Breast infections or mastitis are caused by bacteria that enter through a crack in the nipple, into a milk duct. These infections occur most frequently in breastfeeding mothers. Antibiotics and moist heat are the commonly recommended forms of treatment for a breast infection.

  1. Enlargement and Redness

    • If your breast is infected, it often will become larger than the other breast. The lymph nodes that run toward the armpit also may become enlarged. Your breast will also become very red or pink.

    Discomfort

    • An infected breast usually will feel sore or even painful; it may feel itchy as well.

    Tissue Change

    • A lump sometimes develops within the tissue of an infected breast. The skin of the breast also may develop red streaks.

    Fever

    • Bacterial infections of the breast often are accompanied by fever. The fever also may occur simultaneously with other symptoms such as chills, nausea and vomiting.

    Nipple Changes

    • The nipple of an infected breast may be more sensitive and may emit a discharge which can contain pus.
