Medications to Kill Toe Nail Fungus

Nail infections are common, particularly in the toenails, which typically are tucked away in a warm, moist environment that is advantageous to fungi. A fungal infection can cause discoloration, thickening and crumbling of the nail. Several medications can help.

Oral Medications

Oral anti-fungal drugs are the easiest and most effective treatment for toe nail fungus. They allow new nail growth to be free of infection and to eventually replace the old nail.

Time Frame

The patient usually must take an oral anti-fungal medication for at least 6 weeks, and sometimes for several months.

Considerations

Although uncommon, oral anti-fungal medication can cause liver damage. Patients taking these drugs should not drink alcohol or take other medicines that affect the liver. Additionally, people with liver disease or congestive heart failure may not be able to take anti-fungal medication.

Topical Treatment

People who are uncomfortable about the risks of oral anti-fungal drugs might choose to try a medicated nail polish containing amorolfine or ciclopirox. This treatment does not always work and it can take a year to clear up the infection.

Natural Remedy

A possible natural remedy recommends soaking the toes in Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) daily. This does not always work and may take up to a year.
