Post-Brain Surgery Problems

Any type of brain surgery is a major operation. It is important to understand all of the risks and benefits of this type of surgery. It is also important to remember that brain injuries can take weeks, months or even years to heal completely and doctors may not be able to pinpoint exact recovery times.

  1. Headaches

    • It is common to experience headaches after brain surgery. Some people stop having headaches in a few months, but some continue to have frequent headaches for years after surgery.

    Clicking Noises

    • Patients can sometimes hear a clicking sound in their head after brain surgery. This occurs where bone was removed and then replaced. The clicking noise will go away after the bone heals--a process that takes six to 12 months, according to the University of West Georgia's aneurysm and AVM support web page.

    Itching

    • As the incision site heals, most people who have had brain surgery will find the site to be very itchy. Itchiness is usually at its worst just before the incision's stitches are due to be removed and lasts only for a short time.

    Fatigue

    • People who have had brain surgery may find that they fatigue more easily after surgery than they did before. This may take several months to improve.

    Immediate Probems

    • Dizziness, speech problems, short-term memory loss and weakness may occur after brain surgery. Although these problems can be frustrating and frightening, they are not unusual and usually lessen over several weeks.
