Grants for School Kitchens

School kitchens provide nutrition, during lunch and sometimes breakfast or snacks, to students on a daily basis. Sometimes their meals are the most nutritious thing a child eats all day.

  1. Significance

    • Fresh, healthy foods and innovative machines can be expensive. However, schools dedicated to providing nutritious options are eligible for a number of grants, which allows them to best serve students who may not otherwise be exposed to such food.

    Uses

    • Some grants are for specific meals, such as the Dairy Max Expanding Breakfast program. Another popular use, such as provided by the Healthy Sprouts program, is for school gardens, from which kitchens can pick fresh herbs and vegetables.

    Sources

    • School kitchen grants may come from government sources, such as the United States Department of Agriculture. They also come from corporate foundations such as the Love Your Veggies program, from Hidden Valley salad dressings, which provides $10,000 for vegetable incorporation.

    Geography

    • While some grants are for national use, others are available only in particular areas. Many of these are available through state departments of education, such as Virginia's Equipment Assistance Grants for School Nutrition programs.

    International

    • Some grants are available outside the U.S. as well. For instance, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Program is open to schools in Australia.
