According to clinical studies published by the Food and Drug Administration on RxList.com, approximately 9 percent of study participants discontinued use of Concerta due to its side effects.
Types of Common Side Effects

Common side effects of Concerta include rapid heartbeat, agitation, loss of appetite, weight loss, nervousness, insomnia, nasal congestion and unusual skin warmth.

Risks

Some patients develop symptoms of psychosis or mania related to the use of Concerta. Seizures, severe aggression and gastrointestinal obstruction are additional risks of the drug.
Warning

Serious cardiovascular problems, including arrhythmias have resulted in the sudden death of children and adolescents taking Concerta. Adults are also at risk for fatal strokes and heart attacks.
Considerations

Because there is not yet sufficient evidence that Concerta does not cause birth defects, doctors typically do not prescribe the drug for pregnant women. Additionally, children under the age of 6 should not take the drug due to its side effects.
