The severity of Accutane's side effects are such that the Food and Drug Administration instituted an educational program known as iPLEDGE that patients must complete prior to receiving a prescription for Accutane.

Common side effects of Accutane include crusting of the skin, difficulty wearing contact lenses, headaches, sensitivity to the sun like, upset stomach, thinning hair and dryness of your mouth, skin, eyes and nose.

Some patients develop inflammation of the pancreas or liver and elevated blood lipid levels while taking Accutane. Additionally, use of the drug has the potential to cause blurred vision, the inability to see well at night and irreversible hearing loss.

It is possible to develop severe depression, psychosis or increased cranial pressure while taking Accutane. In rare cases, patients attempt suicide or have thoughts of self-harm associated with use of the drug.

Accutane poses a high risk for birth defects and miscarriages. Because of this, the iPLEDGE program requires women to submit to pregnancy testing and take oral contraception medications to avoid these complications.
