What Are Timelines Used For?

Timelines can be used for professional or personal purposes, and can be adapted for several situations. From children to adults, timelines have a place in many areas of daily life.

    Study Buddy

  1. A timeline can be used to help a history student study. If you are studying the Civil War, for example, you can use a timeline to list the events of the war and the dates they happened. The timeline is a visual representation of the war as well as a quick reference guide for remembering important dates and events.
  2. Reading Helper

  3. When reading a story, you can use a timeline to keep track of the important events in the plot. If you are reading Romeo and Juliet, for example, your timeline would include Romeo and Juliet's first meeting, their balcony interlude, their marriage, Romeo's battle with Tybalt and their deaths. You can use this type of timeline to help you write a report or study for a test or quiz.
  4. Workplace Goals

  5. You can use a timeline in business, too. If you want to set a goal for your employees, such as raising profits by 10 percent, you can use a timeline to outline the ways you will accomplish that goal and how long it will take. By using a timeline, you can break down a major goals into smaller steps to facilitate a smooth transition toward achieving that goal.
  6. Personal Life

  7. In your personal life, a timeline can track your goals. Maybe you want to lose 15 pounds by Christmas. You can use a timeline to list the pounds you want to lose every week or month between now and Dec. 25. As you lose the weight, you can check it off to keep track of your progress.
  8. Chronicle History

  9. Timelines are commonly used to chronicle history, such as the events in a war or an era in time. It might also be used to detail the major events in a family's history or the life of an individual. Timelines work well for chronicling history because they can easily display dates and descriptions of events in chronological order.
