Foot Pain From Cycling

Foot discomfort while cycling is a common problem, but it often has a quick fix. Wearing the wrong shoes usually causes it, but improper technique or bike fit can trigger it, too.

  1. Pain

    • If you have pain in the arch or ball of your foot, switch out the foot beds in your cycling shoes to ones that offer more support. Consider custom cycling orthotics. This is especially true if you have high arches or roll your feet too far inward when walking or running.

    Numbness

    • Shoes that are too tight can cause numbness in your toes. Try wearing thinner socks or loosening the straps on your shoes. Also consider getting a larger size.

    Cramping

    • If your shoes are too tight or narrow, you may experience a cramping in your feet or plantar pain. Different brands of shoes vary in width, so find a wider shoe, move up a size or loosen the straps. Wearing thinner socks may help.

    Cold

    • If your feet get cold while riding, you may experience pain. Buy booties and toe covers for your cycling shoes and wear wool socks while riding.

    Other Suggestions

    • Sometimes foot pain goes beyond your shoes. You may need to use easier gears to keep from mashing the pedals. Make sure the seat height and cleat position are correct.
