Cystic Kidney Disease

By definition, kidney cysts are sacs usually filled with fluid. They are benign (non-cancerous) growths on the kidney. According to the Mayo Clinic, at least half of all individuals over the age of 50 have at least one kidney cyst.

  1. Symptoms

    • Kidney cysts are usually asymptomatic (without symptoms). However, some individuals may experience pain and pressure in the abdomen.

    Diagnosis

    • Kidney cysts are often discovered by accident, though an MRI or CT while testing for a different medical condition.

    Treatment

    • Most kidney cysts can go untreated. However, in cases where the kidney cysts may cause pressure or pain, surgical removal may be recommended.

    Complications

    • In the event the cysts are classified as polycystic kidney disease, complications can arise. In some individuals, kidney failure can occur.

    Polycystic Kidney Disease Treatment

    • Treatment for polycystic kidney disease many include managing the pain associated with the disease. Surgical removal of the cysts may also be recommend. And, if high blood pressure is present, medications to control the blood pressure may also be prescribed.
