International Airlines Luggage Rules

Baggage restrictions on international flights that land or originate in the U.S. follow Transportation Security Administration regulations and airline policy.

TSA Restrictions

The TSA has a list of items that are prohibited under any circumstances.They are generally classified in five categories: sharp objects, sporting goods, guns and firearms, tools, martial arts and self-defense items, explosive and flammable materials, disabling chemicals and other dangerous items.

Check-In Luggage Restrictions

All airlines have size and weight restrictions regarding check-in luggage. Fees are usually incurred for checking in more than two bags or for having bags that weigh more than 50 lbs. and/or exceed 62 linear inches.

Most International Destinations

On international flights, airlines such as Delta and American allow two checked bags, per passenger at no extra charge, though there are some exceptions. Check with the airline before packing.

Travel Between the U.S., Canada and Europe

Many airlines offer only one (and in some cases no) free bag for travel between the U.S., Canada and Europe. They impose a fee for all additional bags.

Carry-On

Carry-on restrictions tend to be the same worldwide. Two personal items are the norm, and items in excess of 45 inches (length + width + height) are too large.

Exceptions

Airlines like United allow baggage fee waivers for active duty members of the military traveling with no more than two bags. In addition, those who belong to customer reward programs and who have accumulated a certain amount of frequent flyer miles can sometimes have fees waived.
