Snappy Training for Dogs
Startle or aversion tactics correct a dog that is misbehaving at times when the owner is not present to intervene. These tactics work by stopping behavior with sudden, loud or unpleasant sound or other stimulus, like spraying water, that the dog does not like. The dog will associate the unwanted stimulus with the undesirable behavior.

Identification
-
A Snappy Trainer is similar to a mousetrap. It is a large plastic paddle and a spring that, when set and tripped, makes a loud snapping noise and flies into the air. Snappy Trainers are usually sold in packages of two for less than $10.
Features
-
A Snappy Trainer does not harm a pet. It doesn't trap or hit a pet's paw or face. It works by startling the pet in direct response to undesirable behavior. The Snappy Trainer works best when it surprises a pet and is most effective with very young dogs, and before bad behavior has become ingrained.

Function
-
A Snappy Trainer will help stop a dog from jumping on furniture, cruising countertops, raiding garbage or digging in houseplants or specific places in a garden. A dog often misbehaves in these ways when its owner is not present to correct it, and a Snappy Trainer can be set to surprise a dog and deter bad behavior.
Other Uses
-
Snappy Trainers can also be used to deter cats and small wild animals. Because they have some metal parts, the Snappy Trainer should not be left outdoors for extended periods.
Expert Insight
-
Any type of correction for unwanted behavior should include basic obedience training, adequate exercise and a consistent program of reward-based behavior reinforcement. Deterrents of any type, used alone, will not produce long-term results.
