Information on Spinal Meningitis

Spinal meningitis is one of many types of meningitis. It is passed on from person to person by a virus, chemical irritation or fungi. A patient can also get it from tumors and drug allergies.

  1. Symptoms

    • The main symptoms of spinal meningitis are nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to light, severe headache and stiff neck. Other symptoms include changes in mental status and fever and chills.

    Diagnosis

    • A diagnosis of spinal meningitis is made by using a spinal tap to remove spinal fluid, which is then used to grow bacteria. A chest X-ray may also be done.

    Treatment

    • Powerful antibiotics are the main treatment for spinal meningitis; however, other symptoms such as seizures and swelling of the brain need to be treated separately.

    Complications

    • Complications for patients who have suffered from spinal meningitis include hearing loss, paralysis, seizures and mental retardation. Spinal meningitis can also cause a coma, brain damage or death.

    Prognosis

    • If spinal meningitis is caught early enough, the prognosis for a complete recovery is high. Anyone experiencing the symptoms of meningitis should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
