About Rotavirus Symptoms

Rotavirus is an intestinal virus that affects an individual's digestive system. It is the most common form of diarrhea in humans and can be treated once it has been diagnosed.

  1. Prevalence

    • Rotavirus affects people of all socioeconomic standings and is widespread throughout the world. The virus can occur any time of the year, but it generally peaks in the southwest U.S. in the fall and by spring, spreads to the northeast U.S.

    Length of Symptoms

    • It takes about two days from the time that the individual has been exposed to the virus for symptoms to appear. Symptoms can last anywhere from five to nine days.

    Symptoms

    • Even though watery diarrhea is the No. 1 symptom of rotavirus, an individual with rotavirus will also experience vomiting, fever and abdominal pain.

    Dehydration

    • Due to the fact that the body is losing fluids faster than it can replenish them, the individual may become dehydrated. Lethargy; dry mouth; dry, cool skin; and extreme thirst are all signs of dehydration.

    Treatment

    • There is no available treatment for rotavirus symptoms other than to remain hydrated to prevent dehydration, which could result in further complications.
