Itchy Scalp in Children

Itchy scalp in children is a common condition and can be something medical to something simple. Determining the severity of the itchy scalp will assist you in determining if it is something to be concerned about.

  1. Common Causes

    • Common causes of itchy scalp in children are dandruff, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. If these are the culprit, than each have their own remedy usually without a prescription required.

    Lice

    • If you suspect that lice is the cause of your child's itchy scalp than a visual inspection is required. Lice are very small parasites that will cause extreme itching, and they need to be removed with a chemical-based solution purchased over the counter.

    Allergic Reaction

    • If you have changed shampoos or other hair products recently, your child's itchy scalp may be caused by an allergic reaction to the new product.

    Uncleanliness

    • Uncleanliness of the scalp is the most common reason for itchy scalp in children, also known as seborrheic dermatitis. This condition is a build up on the scalp of the oil naturally produced in the skin. Seborrheic dermatitis can be reduced by using a medicated shampoo to reduce the production of the oil.

    Potential Disease

    • If the child's itchy scalp persists and she also has a fever, you should seek medical attention to test your child for chicken pox or other communicable diseases. Chicken pox will affect the scalp and eventually cover the entire body.
