History of Greek Architecture
Few examples of ancient Greek architecture have survived to modern times. What we do know can be credited to ancient historians like Pliny the Elder and Pausanias. Because of these writers, we have detailed written accounts of what Greek architecture looked like.
-
Geometric Period
-
The Geometric period of Greek architecture dates from approximately 1100 to 700 B.C. Geometric principles of architecture led to large sparse elements centered within a colonnade.
Archaic Period
-
The Archaic period lasted from 660 to 470 B.C. This period introduced extensive use of limestone and marble in temples and government structures.
-
Classical Period
-
Greek architecture's Classical period lasted from 475 to 323 B.C. Doric-style columns were used in Olympia's Temple of Zeus.
Hellenistic Period
-
The introduction of Oriental elements marked the beginning of the Hellenistic period. This period lasted from 323 to 31 B.C. Features like the arch and vault began to be used in private houses.
Greek Revival
-
During Europe's Renaissance, Greek architecture became wildly popular. The revival is credited to archaeologists like Joachim Winckelmann, who excavated Pompeii.
