Types of Apple

Young and old, almost everyone has had some variety of apple. Crisp, tart, tangy and sweet, apples are a nutritious addition to any meal, no matter which varieties you enjoy.

Types

There are 7,500 varieties of apples worldwide. While all 50 states grow apples, there are only about 100 different varieties grown commercially in the United States. Some of the most common varieties are Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, McIntosh, Jonathon, Red Rome, Winesap, Gala and Fuji.

Uses

Different varieties are suited for different purposes. Some, like the Jonathon, Red Rome, and Granny Smith, are great for baking, while the Red Delicious, Gala and McIntosh are good for snacking. The Winesap does well baking, but is most used for cider.

Geography

Apples grow all over the world. Thirty-six states in the United States harvest apples commercially, but the fruit grows in all 50 states.

History

History of the apple dates back to 8,000 BC in eastern Kazakstan. Apples appear in religious history, literature and even science, when Sir Isaac Newton had one land on his head.

Fun Fact

A hedgeapple is the fruit of the Osage Orange Tree, but the fruit is as different from a traditional apple as... apples and oranges!
