Tourism in Pakistan Administered Kashmir
The part of Kashmir that falls on the Pakistani side of the Line of Control is known as Azad Kashmir. Azad means "freedom," so essentially it is called "Free Kashmir."

In the world of international politics, Kashmir often refers to a larger geographic area including the entire Northern Areas of Pakistan, Indian controlled Jammu and Kashmir, and even the Aksai Chin and Shaksam Valley that are now part of China. When it comes to tourism and travel in Pakistan, Kashmir refers only to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir region.

Muzzafarabad and the southern parts of Azad Kashmir can be visited year-round. Mountainous areas are only accessible from May to October. Between July and September mountain roads may be washed out due to heavy monsoon rains.

Kashmir is known for its natural beauty. Great places to visit are the Neelam and upper Jhelum valleys and the Machiara National Park.
Getting There

The closest international airport is in Islamabad. Buses from Rawalpindi go to Muzzafarabad either via Murree or Mansehra. Other routes are generally off limits to foreigners.

Foreign tourists must stay away from the areas situated along the Line of Control and all military cantonment areas. Officially, all foreign tourists are supposed to contact the Azad Kashmir and Jammu Home Department in Muzaffarabad to be granted a "no objection card" before traveling outside the city, although in actuality not all travelers do this.

Due to the earthquake in 2005, much of infrastructure of the region was destroyed. It can be difficult to find lodging, as much of the available accommodation is taken up by aid workers. Women should avoid traveling alone or at night. Always wear modest clothing.
