Hamstring Injuries
Hamstring injuries are a common sports injury that can be avoided in most cases by stretching exercises as part of a warmup. Hamstring injuries are common in athletes taking part in sports that involve sprinting and jumping, such as football, rugby and basketball.

Hamstring Muscles
-
There are three hamstring muscles called semitendinosus, semimembranosus and bicep femoris. Hamstring strains or pulls are often referred to as tears in one or more of these muscles.
The Hamstring
-
The role of the hamstring is to bend the knee and move the thigh backwards at the hip.

Hamstring Injury Symptoms
-
The common symptoms of hamstring injuries include a sudden sharp pain at the back of the thigh, pain felt upon stretching the affected muscle and swelling or bruising of the hamstring area.
RICE
-
Early treatment of hamstring injuries includes the RICE treatment, which refers to rest, ice and compression, and finally evaluation. Ice should never be applied directly to the skin.
Grades of Injury
-
Hamstring injuries are graded on a scale of one to three. Grade-one injuries are mild, rapidly healing injuries, but Grade-three injuries can have a severe effect on walking and might take months to heal.
Avulsion Injury
-
In severe cases, hamstring injuries are called avulsion injuries. In these cases, muscle tendons completely tear away from the bone and in extreme cases might remove a piece of bone with the tendon.
