Grants for Buying a Home

If you need help financing a down payment, paying for closing costs or just want to receive the best possible home loan, there is a variety of grant and loan options available through federal, state and local agencies.

  1. First-Time Homebuyers

    • Many of the grants for homebuyers require that you be a "first-time homebuyer." This means you must not have owned your own home at any point in the past three years.

    Revitalization Areas

    • Grants funded through the Department of Housing and Urban Development will often require that the home you buy be located in a revitalization area. These are typically lower-income areas.

    Public-Housing Residents

    • Residents of public housing may qualify to receive vouchers each month to help pay for a mortgage or other home expenses or loans with little to no down payment or closing costs.

    Good Neighbor

    • HUD's Good Neighbor Next Door program offers houses in revitalization areas at a 50 percent discount to teachers, law enforcement/emergency medical personnel and firefighters.

    Finding Opportunities

    • The Department of Housing and Urban Development is the best place to start your search for grants for buying a home. You can also check the Grants.gov housing section.
