Do I Need a Visa to Visit India?

Before an American visits India, it will be necessary to obtain an Indian visa.

    Where to Obtain an Indian Visa

  1. You can get the proper visa from an Indian embassy or consulate. There are consulates in Houston and New York.
  2. Common Types of Visas

  3. Indian visas are most commonly granted for business or tourist visits.
  4. How Long is a Visa Good For?

  5. A tourist visa is good for six months to 10 years. A business visa is valid for six months or at least one year. You can obtain either for single or multiple entries, but you can only stay a maximum of six months each time.
  6. Waiting Period

  7. The usual processing period through the embassy or consulate is 10 days as of October 2009.
  8. Cost

  9. The consular fee for a six-month visa is $60, and a one-year visa is $85. Five- and 10-year visas are $150. All allow multiple entries. In addition, there is a $20 processing fee as well as a visa fee of at least $3. Multiple-entry visas have higher visa fees: $6 for a tourist visa and up to $75 for a business visa.
