Upright NordicTrack Stationary Bikes vs. Recumbent

NordicTrack stationary bikes are an excellent choice in cardiovascular exercise for people of all fitness levels. Both the upright and recumbent bikes offer a number of benefits and are almost equally matched in performance. However, there are some differences worth considering.

  1. Types

    • There are four types of NordicTrack bikes, two of which are upright: the NordicTrack C2 SI and the FreeMotion c7.7. The C3 si and the Commercial 400 Bike are recumbent bikes.

    Weight Capacity

    • The FreeMotion and the Commercial bike have a weight capacity up to 350 pounds. The C3 has a capacity up to 300 pounds and the C2 SI has a weight capacity up to 250 pounds.

    Accessories

    • Built-in fans can help keep you cool and comfortable during your workout. The Commercial bike and the FreeMotion come with a fan. All four are equipped with resistance options, workout programs and heart-rate monitors.

    Price

    • The FreeMotion is by far the most expensive, at $1,699 (down from $2,599, as of October 2009). The C2 SI is $699, as is the Commercial bike (down from $1,299), with the C3 priced at $599 (down from $999).

    Mobility

    • Upright bikes, which mimic a traditional bike, offer much more range of motion than the recumbent bikes. With an upright bike you can sit or stand, which helps to vary the workout, target different muscle groups and offer relief for you rear end.

    Tips

    • Before you invest in a NordicTrack, get a one-week pass to a local gym where you can freely experiment with both types of bikes.
