Types of Fabric Paint

Fabric paints are a fast and easy way to transform clothes, wall hangings, curtains and upholstery. Although most envision a painter with a brush in hand, in recent years, fabric paints have expanded in technique, application and medium.

  1. Function

    • Fabric or textile paint is used when repurposing existing fabrications and is commonly referred to as wearable art. There are a variety of water-based fabric paints and textile mediums to choose from such as translucent, acrylic and opaque, but the key factor is determining which texture effect is to be achieved before paint selection.

    Fabric Type and Fabric Paint

    • It is also important to determine what type of design art and fabric texture surface will be used before application. For example, for exact art that requires specific line work, it is best to select tightly woven fabric, and for abstract or freehand paintings, loosely woven fabric is the best choice.

    Application

    • There are different application formats such as fabric spray, stencil, brush-on, sponge, airbrush and fabric pens. Each paint has a distinctive characteristic and can be mixed with different textile mediums such as water or colorless extenders to achieve different paint consistencies, and develop effects such as water colors, fluorescents or metallics.

    Fabric Paint: Setting and Warnings

    • Each fabric paint has a specific drying time, and manufacturers normally advise 24 hours. Although acrylic paint can be mixed with other paint colors to achieve specific tones, it is important to note it is a permanent paint and will dry without any heat application unlike textile paint, which has to be heat set.

    Different Fabric Paints

    • There are a variety of fabric paint manufacturers to choose from such as ColorArtz, Jacquard, Pebeo, Createx, Tulip and FolkArt.
