What Are the Dangers of Perfumes?
We live in a fragrant world: From the natural scent of pine in the outdoors to the breezy air-fresheners in a climate-controlled office, our noses are endlessly cajoled and intrigued. But not all fragrances are created equal. Does this Spark an idea?

What's in a scent?
-
"Scents have the ability to alter mood and trigger powerful memories that are embedded in our minds," according to Betty Bridges, author of "Fragrance: emerging health and environmental concerns" in the Flavour and Fragrance Journal. "Research indicates that the sense of smell impacts not only psychological but physical health as well."
Fragrance in household items
-
From disinfectants, dishwashing liquids, and hand soaps to air fresheners and scented candles, our homes are constantly bombarded with a barrage of aromas, whether or not we are aware of their effects.

Health Issues
-
"With increased usage and exposure there are increased anecdotal and clinical accounts of fragranced products causing, triggering and exacerbating health conditions," states Bridges. These include asthma, allergies and migraine headaches. "Some fragrance materials have been found to accumulate in adipose tissue and are present in breast milk," she adds.
Environmental Concerns
-
Many consumers have taken steps in switching to green and organic alternatives, in an effort to minimize potentially adverse effects of using too many scented products (or for some, to quell random allergic reactions). Bridges notes that fragranced products contain volatile compounds, which contribute to air and water pollution. "Synthetic musk compounds are persistent in the environment and contaminate waterways and aquatic wildlife," she explains.
Social Impact
-
When it comes to choosing one's own signature scent, little is known about health repercussions. For now, it boils down to personal preference, including adherence to common courtesy rules when wearing colognes and scented body products. Being aware of the "scent circle"---an arm's-length radius from the wearer---ensures proper dissipation of fragrance without upsetting surrounding people with a cloying aroma.
