DSL Types

DSL (digital subscriber line) utilizes copper phone lines to transmit data at frequencies not used for voice transmission. As of 2009, it is one of the most popular options for broadband Internet access in the United States due to its widespread availability and affordability.

  1. ADSL

    • Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) offers a higher download speed (ranging from 1.5 to 9 MB per second) with a slower upload speed (ranging from 16 to 640kB per second.) It is marketed toward residential users. As of 2009, ADSL prices begin at $19.99 per month.

    SDSL

    • Symmetric DSL (SDSL) offers the same download and upload speed. It is marketed toward businesses that require a fast upstream rate. As of 2009, ADSL prices begin at $21.99 per month.

    VHDSL

    • Very High Speed DSL (VHDSL or VDSL) offers upstream speeds of 13 to 52 MB per second down and downstream speeds of 1.5 to 2.3 MB per second. As of 2009, VDSL prices start at $40 per month and are often bundled with digital television and telephone service.

    Other Types

    • Less common types of DSL include iDSL which is DSL conducted via ISDN lines and rate adaptive DSL (RADSL) which extends the length of distance from the central office to the customer.

    Competition

    • As of 2009, DSL technology competes directly with cable Internet services which utilize cable television lines for Internet access, and satellite Internet which uses a satellite signal to provide access to remote locations.
