Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) offers a higher download speed (ranging from 1.5 to 9 MB per second) with a slower upload speed (ranging from 16 to 640kB per second.) It is marketed toward residential users. As of 2009, ADSL prices begin at $19.99 per month.
SDSL

Symmetric DSL (SDSL) offers the same download and upload speed. It is marketed toward businesses that require a fast upstream rate. As of 2009, ADSL prices begin at $21.99 per month.

VHDSL

Very High Speed DSL (VHDSL or VDSL) offers upstream speeds of 13 to 52 MB per second down and downstream speeds of 1.5 to 2.3 MB per second. As of 2009, VDSL prices start at $40 per month and are often bundled with digital television and telephone service.
Other Types

Less common types of DSL include iDSL which is DSL conducted via ISDN lines and rate adaptive DSL (RADSL) which extends the length of distance from the central office to the customer.
Competition

As of 2009, DSL technology competes directly with cable Internet services which utilize cable television lines for Internet access, and satellite Internet which uses a satellite signal to provide access to remote locations.
